She emerges from the curtain with a dress glittering like the midday sun. The cadets from the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps march with Old Glory, delicately climbing the oak staircase adjoining the stage. The students, with the spotlight shining brightly in their eyes, step to the forefront of the auditorium, a sea of peers beneath them. Many seem distracted by their devices, or chatting amongst their comrades, utterly ignoring the display. The microphone crackles on.

“Students, please rise for our National Anthem.”

The woman in the sparkling gown eyes the group. Most of the pupils abide and stand, some begrudgingly. But in the center of the room a handful of attendees sit motionless. They look at the spectacle with a conspicuous disgust. They snigger as they see their acquaintances rise to their feet. They sneer, murmuring defiantly that they won’t show any respect for a banner representing the suffering of minorities.

In recent times, there has been widespread discontent associated with any exhibition of patriotism. Activists and athletes alike have taken common cause in the erosion of national pride, and the birth of contemporary historical revisionism in the United States. America, according to this philosophy, has never pioneered liberty and freedom. Rather, it is and has always been, a deeply racist country. The people who reside within it are no better.

However, while the debate rages on in the political realm, these smears of Old Glory create a great divide amongst individuals of the upcoming generation. Adolescents, and even those of a younger age, have been manipulated to believe that there is a phantom lurking in the ether attempting to subjugate them exclusively because of their skin pigment. This is an idea rooted in absurd untruth. What is most perturbing is that, similar to the national debt, the current propagators of such a narrative will leave behind a destruction that they may not live to see.

These people are members of the “interim generation.” Their upbringings have been after the fall of segregation and Jim Crow, but before what will inevitably be yet another period of turmoil. Presenting the notion to vulnerable minds that their fellow Americans are nothing more than bigots who desire to suppress them and their ability to succeed, will lead to renewed tensions for future generations.

Actor Dennis Leary once said, “Racism isn’t born, folks. It’s taught. I have a 2-year-old son. You know what he hates? Naps. End of list.”

Many of our leaders are directly responsible for creating divisions amongst the people, 99.9% of whom only care about three colors; the red, white and blue. As inheritors of the only truly free country on earth, we will perish if we don’t fight this insidious attack from within.

The dream of Martin Luther King Jr., that one day there would exist an America where his four little children would “not be judged by the color of their skin,” but “by the content of their character,” is fading. As those who spew corrosive rhetoric sit upon their respective thrones of power, immunized from the repercussions of their actions, their admirers will convert their visions into a grim reality. We will have reaped what they have sown.

The children of today will be the ideological warriors of tomorrow. It is unfortunate that an infant birthed at this moment may very well grow up knowing a time where the amount of melanin in their skin heavily influences how their fellow citizens view them. We are seeing this America begin to take shape. This will gradually chip at the fabric of the United States, which hold its citizens in a common bond.

When the American Flag is raised, there is no longer a uniform display of allegiance. Rather, a division has been extended from the realm of political discourse into recreational and academic life. A blade, which demands to sunder all in its path, has begun to cut. If it accomplishes its objective, there will be nothing binding us together, including Old Glory. The unfortunate fact is, it has succeeded thus far and shows no signs of slowing.
