KLATSKY: Democratic Socialist Ironically Embraces Capitalism

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old democratic socialist candidate from New York, has been making the rounds recently after defeating incumbent representative Joseph Crowley. She will face off against Republican candidate Anthony Pappas in November.

Oscasio-Cortez is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, a political group that calls for the abolishment of profit and the redistribution of wealth.

However, Ocasio-Cortez, who was a Bernie Sanders staffer during the 2016 election, ironically momentarily abandoned her socialist roots following one of the debates, as people started asking her what brand of lipstick she was wearing.

To which she responded:

The makeup company ended up selling out almost immediately after she tweeted the brand of lipstick.

You would think that, since the lipstick she wore is sold by massive companies like Sephora and Macy’s, she wouldn’t buy a product from the ‘top 1 percent,” as people like Bernie Sanders like to proclaim.

Ocasio-Cortez has extremely radical positions, calling for the complete government takeover of healthcare, housing as a human right, a federal jobs guarantee, regulations on undefined “assault weapons,” and more. She also criticized Israel for defending their borders and their citizens in May when Hamas attempted to break into Israel to kill Jews.

The Guardian, Al Jazeera, and other media outlets proclaim that Ocasio-Cortez is the future of the Democratic Party—if so, Republicans might control Washington for quite some time.

Socialists like Ocasio-Cortez like to make the claim that they are victims of the oppressive capitalist, racist, misogynistic system that America was founded on.

As it turns out, however, Alexandria, moved to Westchester County when she was five. The house she lived in sold for $355,000 in 2016. In addition, Westchester County’s median annual income is $116,741, almost triple the average income around the area.

While Ocasio-Cortez was working at the Flats Fix, a bar, she and a co-worker had to split $560 in tips. Ocasio-Cortez gave her co-worker a mere $50 dollars, and kept the remaining $510. Only after her co-worker complained to the restaurant manager did Ocasio-Cortez fork over another $50.

Ocasio-Cortez is not the only socialist with a track record of materialism.

The most well-known socialist in the country, Bernie Sanders, just earned $1 million for the second year in a row. This puts him in the same “top 1 percent” that he vows to tax at extremely high rates. It’s also worth mentioning that he has three vacation homes, one of which costs $600,000.

Despite the fact that Ocasio-Cortez may be intelligent, socialists neglect to realize that every product they purchase, every service they buy is a result of capitalism. This is the case because there are people who are willing to provide goods and services in exchange for cash by engaging in a mutual transaction.

In contrast, socialism compels people to engage in activities or transactions they may not want to, whether that be people being forced to buy healthcare through Obama’s individual mandate, or if people are forced to pay 90 percent of their income to the federal government because they make more money than their neighbor does.

Evidently, it appears that some young people embrace the ideas of “democratic socialism” but ironically end up relying on the benefits of capitalism to survive.
