Student Op-Ed: Should “White Boys” Still Be Allowed to Talk?

“I am so g****mned tired of listening to white boys.”

On February 7, Dickinson College’s student paper, The Dickinsonian, published a piece titled, “Should White Boys Still Be Allowed to Talk?”

The Op-Ed was written by senior guest writer, Leda Fisher, who went on a rant about her disdain for “white boys” with anything to say.

Fisher starts by insinuating that “white boys” named “something like Jake, or Chad, or Alex” who were taught that their “voice is the most important in every room” are really just sharing their opinion followed with, “Do you agree?” when they ask a question during a lecture.

Fisher begins her tirade with:

“American society tells men, but especially white men, that their opinions have merit and that their voice is valuable, but after four years of listening to white boys in college, I am not so convinced,” she said. “In my time at Dickinson I have listened to probably hundreds of white boys talk. It feels incessant.”

“The list of what white boys think they are qualified to talk about is endless,” she said before listing the things white men apparently can’t wait to talk about, like “the state of feminism in America, whether the LGBTQ+ population finally has enough rights, the merits of capitalism, etc.”

She then stated that “very few” white boys understand that “their (ill-informed, uncritical) opinions do not constitute truth.” And, that “[w]hite boys” actually just “spout the narrative of dominant ideologies and pretend they’re hot takes instead of the same misleading garbage shoved down our throats by American institutions from birth.”

It’s getting hot.

“I am so g****mned tired of listening to white boys,” Fisher continued.

“I cannot describe to you how frustrating it is to be forced to listen to a white boy explain his take on the Black experience in the Obama-era,” she said. “Hey Brian, I’m an actual Black woman alive right now with a brain.”

Also, she said that in “this world, where white men debate the pain of other people for fun and then take away their rights,” Brian’s understanding of her life actually carries more weight than her own. Additionally, Fisher further specified that, “White boys seem not to understand is that they do not exist separate from the rest of the world.”

Oh boy. Oh sorry, I mean “Oh white boys….”

“You do not speak alone, you speak with the weight of every other white man who has spoken over a woman, erased the contributions of queer people from history, or denigrated “broken English” as unintelligent,” she said. “You speak with the weight of policies and laws meant to forever define intelligence by how it measures up to the bros of America.”

“So, should white boys still be allowed to share their “opinions[?]” Should we be forced to listen? In honor of Black History Month, I’m gonna go with a hell no,” Fisher said.

Finally, she challenged all the “Chrises, Ryans, Olivers, and Seans out there” to read something that challenges them with an open mind.

Alrighty then.

In a campus-wide email, Dickinson College President Margee Ensign reminded everyone that The Dickinsonian has control over their own editing process and that they do not speak for the college.

“Let me be clear. Dickinson believes in free speech. We also condemn stereotyping and prejudice.”

President Ensign then said that, “Dickinson values inclusivity,” and that they “expect their community members to engage in thoughtful dialogue and believe that no group or individual should be silenced.”

Additionally, she said that the school would “provide opportunities for constructive conversations to respond to the divisions we are experiencing on our campus and in society.”

The Dicksonian did not immediately respond to Lone Conservative’s request for comments.
